WHAT IF I...?
Become Disabled

Here's what you need to do:

  • Notify your supervisor or manager immediately.

  • Apply for Workers’ Compensation. If you become ill or injured in a work-related incident, you may be eligible for Workers’ Compensation. Your supervisor or manager will assist you in this process.

  • File for Short-term Disability (STD). If you expect to be out of work for more than fifteen consecutive days, you may be eligible for Short-term Disability benefits. Valassis Communications, Inc. and NCH associates paid through ADP should contact your HR Representative. Valassis Direct Mail and Sales & Marketing associates paid through PeopleSoft should contact the Associate Resource Center at 1-877-238-6847 to initiate your STD claim.

  • Apply for Social Security Disability benefits. After five months of disability, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits. Contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213.

  • File for Long-term Disability. After six months, you may be eligible for long-term disability (LTD) benefits. If you are receiving LTD benefits, you will continue to receive company-sponsored medical, dental, and EAP benefits for up to 3 months provided you remain eligible for LTD benefits (see LTD benefits). You may then be able to continue coverage under COBRA.

  • File for a Waiver of Premium for your Basic and Voluntary Life Insurance. After 9 months of continuous disability, you may be eligible to continue life insurance coverage through Valassis' group plan without paying premiums. You must submit a form for waiver of premium before you have been disabled for 12 months. The waiver of premium form will be auto mailed.

  • File for AD&D Insurance. If your disability is the result of an accident, you may be eligible to receive AD&D Insurance benefits.
